COMMERCIAL IRONIES
We hope the discussion below changes the way you look at the bags of dog food available at your local retailer.
The original commercial dry dag foods were developed as a convenient way to feed your pet and required additional meat to be balanced. In order to minimize the waste products from the slaughter and grain processing industry and to realize some profit from these, the commercial pet food and livestock feed industry were targeted. In order to make these products attractive and safe they are cooked under pressure and at high temperatures and if necessary they fat is removed, they are then dried and ground into a meal. Buyers than purchase this meal through distributors for the various pet food manufacturers. The definition and the minimum nutrient content of these products are set by government regulation on the advise from the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). All these by products are derived from natural sources and thus are considered "natural" by law. These are then mixed together with water and occasionally some whole meats, grains and additional macro and trace minerals supplements. Than cooked at high temperatures, extruded under pressure and cut into kibbles of various shapes, sizes and colors. The Kibble is quickly dried and then sprayed with fat containing any of the amino acids and vitamins lacking or destroyed during the cooking process and antioxidants required to prevent the fat from going rancid during storage. The product is then cooled and bagged. THe end kibble bares little resemblance to the original products that entered the human and animal food chain at the start.
carries a whole line of similar diets plus diets for specific health problems. Many of the "natural" diets are following the same path.
We are told these diets are best for your pets health and we believe what we are told, even when our logic prompts us to question these claims. Advertisements tell us these diets are recommended by veterinarians and top dog breeders, some are even formulated by veterinarians.
To add insult to injury we are told home cooked diets similar to what we feed the rest of our family are severely deficient and not balanced in nutrients and will cause deficiencies. Wait a minute, is this not what we are feeding our growing children???? How many ingredients on a bag of commercial pet food would you find in the produce section of the super market or farmers market? When these ingredients are used in food for human consumption they can be found in the "junk food " section of the supermarket.
A list of vitamins and minerals is an indication that the primary formulation needed extensive supplementation or that these nutrients were lost during the processing of the by-products or during the production of the diet. Ask yourself, if these nutrients were still present and active in the primary ingredients and if this is the great food, made from such high quality ingredients as the fancy packaging says, then why is it necessary to the supplements in the first place?
NRG dehydrated dog food approaches diet formulation using whole food ingredients with minimal processing so supplementing with inorganic vitamins and minerals with questionable digestibility and bioavailability will not be required .
